Let's Play Civilization 5 as Rome

It's been a long while since I last recorded any Let's Plays, so here's a new one!

It turns out not everybody switched to Civilization 6, and in fact new mods for Civilization 5 keep coming out. This campaign features one of them - 5th Unique Component. Other mods just as before.

As Rome, our unique abilities are:

  • 25% faster production in other cities of every building which is already built in our capital
  • Ballista - unique Catapult replacement - slightly stronger
  • Legion - unique Swordsman replacement - slightly stronger, can build roads and forts
  • Forum - unique Market replacement - +10% Great Person
  • Thermae - unique Garden replacement - +1 Science, +1 Culture, +1 Food.
  • Aedes - unique Temple replacement - +1 Global Happiness, cheaper to build, costs no maintenance, and doesn't require a Shrine.
Overall these feel like mid-tier or a bit below abilities. Faster production scales with number of cities, and Aedes gives us a bit of happiness breathing room, so together they support a bit of expansion. Unique units come too early and are of wrong kind to have much impact, early wars are dominated by Composite Bowmen supported by Horsemen.

I'd definitely love to hear feedback, especially technical feedback - I'm recording at higher resolution, and I'm not totally sure if I set OBS correctly for it.

One video a day, full playlist going to be here.

Let's Play Civilization 5 on Tamriel as the Khajiit - post-campaign retrospective

Biting the brother in the neck! by Tambako the Jaguar from flickr (CC-ND)

Unfortunately due to changing circumstances my Youtube channel is probably going to be somewhat less active for at least first half of the year.

My most recent and so far the only series on it was Let's Play Civilization 5 on Tamriel as the Khajiit, which is now slowly coming to a close, so it's time for some retrospective.

Balance between civilizations

I've chosen civilization based on a quick look at who seemed to have interesting gameplay potential - and also because I haven't played as cats before. I thought other civilizations are gonig to have comparable power level, but it's not ever close, and Khajiit are insanely overpowered. Here's what they do:
  • caravan range doubled
  • land military units (but not workers, settlers, great generals etc.) +1 movement and +1 sight
  • workshop replacement with +2 happiness, +1 culture, +2 science/jungle (stacking with University for +4 science/jungle), on top of the usual bonuses
  • caravansary replacement with +2 happiness, +1 culture, double trade range bonus, and the usual gold bonus
In other words:
  • ridiculously powerful happiness bonus (+4 per city), all available fairly early in game, making happiness maybe not quite irrelevant, but a secondary consideration even for highly expansionistic empires
  • ridiculously powerful military bonus (+1 movement and +1 sight is stronger than most UUs - and Khajiit get it for every land unit in every era.
    • To make it even more extreme, Tamriel map is almost all land, so lack of bonuses for ships matters little - and extra movement and sight is still quite effective at shooting ships with your missile units
    • Early game the Bosmer whom I was fighting built Great Wall - possibly the most obnoxious wonder in the game - that extra movement point more or less invalidated their wonder
  • fairly strong science bonus - requiring access to a lot of judge would make it somewhat situational, but guess what - that's precisely the kind of terrain Khajiit start with in every direction
  • fairly strong gold bonus - it's not that huge, mostly it lets you use caravans where others would use cargo ships, which on some maps would be fairly inconsequential, but Tamriel is basically Pangea, so it's especially strong on this map
  • modest culture bonus - +2 culture / city is very good value
  • and all of that requires very little effort - you start with military bonus and you'd be building workshops everywhere anyway - so now you just need to build caravansaries in places you wouldn't otherwise
This is all "way above Korea and Poland" tier.

It would be all right if everybody had comparable bonuses, but as far as I can tell, everybody else's are rather mediocre.

Back when I was playing Ravnica civs, half of them were really overpowered, but they matched each other reasonably well, and I don't think any of them were Khajiit tier.

This unfortunately means I'm not so inclined to give Tamriel another try. Other civs seem not only underpowered, but also rather boring.

Truce Breaking Bug

Civilization 5 won't let you break truces no matter how much you'd like to do so. However I ran into this bug:
  • I wanted to attack Orsimer, but they were a bit strong, so I asked Skyrim to attack them together
  • Skyrim said yes, but give us 10 turns
  • Well, I couldn't wait, so I attacked Orsimer on my own
  • They offered far less resistance than expected, so I took what I wanted and peaced them out
  • Next turn Skyrim came back to me with "10 turns is up, let's attack Orsimer together" dialog, and war started.
  • As far as I can tell, there were no negative diplomatic consequences of this truce breaking, because game didn't even consider truce breaking to be a possibility

Playing with 13 civilizations

The game had 13 civilizations on Standard sized maps (as opposed to the usual 8), so I expected a bloodbath fighting for what little land there was available. Three civilizations (Bretons, Orsimer, Hammerfell) had their capital so close I'd expect them to DoW each other before getting Composite Bowmen.

It turns out that number of tiles is Standard sized, but amount of land is much bigger, so there was plenty available for everyone - and map had a lot of strategically places mountains to slow down early warfare as well.

Unfortunately 13 civs on Immortal meant it was completely pointless to go after wonders, religions, or domination victory, while making research agreements and science victory a lot stronger.

I think I had 8 research agreements at one point, with +50% science from research agreement thanks to Porcelain Tower stacked on top of +25% from relevant Rationalism policy. That in addition to all my science bonuses, funded by my gold bonuses.

I think 13 civs is generally too many, and it would be better to play with a smaller subset.

Minor mods

I'm increasingly thinking that I should uninstall all promotions mods and just play with vanilla promotions. There's really very little value in it, and it replaces one optimal formula (accuracy/barrage 1-2-3, logistics, range) with another (unlock 1-3, range, unlock 4, logistics).

I'm less convinced that I should be playing with captureable settlers, as that makes things a bit easy with AI stupidity. I still enjoy capturing other great people a lot, so I'd need to customize that.

Other issues

Science victory is a bit boring, so I spent far too much time fighting completely pointless wars late game. I could have finished the campaign a lot faster if I just ignored everybody else and built space ship.

I only just realized I misspelled "Khajiit" as "Khajit". Oh well.

Let's Play Civilization 5 on Tamriel as the Khajit

It's new year and it's time to play some video games after six weeks break with nearly none.

For this campaign I grabbed Tamriel civilization pack and Tamriel map pack, with every civilization starting in its historical part of Tamriel, and unusually high number of 13 civilizations on standard-sized map which normally holds just 8. On the other hand the map has relatively little water, so number of land tiles is probably high enough to support 13.

It will still be harder to win with so many competitors.

Civilizations fighting over control of Tamriel are:
  • Cyrus (Hammerfell / Redguards)
  • Gortwog gro-Nagorm (Orsinium / Orsimer)
  • Haymon Camoran (Valenwood / Bosmer)
  • High King Emeric (High Rock / Bretons)
  • Hlaalu Helseth (Morrowind / Dunmer)
  • Keirgo (Elsweyr / Khajit)
  • King Dumac (Dwemereth / Dwemer)
  • Mehrunes Dagon (Oblivion)
  • Queen Ayrenn (Summerset Isles / Altmer)
  • The An-Xileel (Argonia / Argonians)
  • Tiber Septim (Cyrodiil / Imperials)
  • Umaril the Unfeathered (The Ayleids)
  • Ysgramor (Skyrim / Nords)
They're generally all fairly strong, even if somewhat less so than Ravnica civilizations.

Here's episode one. Episodes will be released one a day at same time on this playlist:

As Khajit we're getting double land caravan range, +1 movement and +1 sight to all military land units (not great generals, workers etc.), and two special buildings - caravansary replacement which lets us be trade-oriented civ, and workshop replacement, which allegedly produces some skooma.

Let's Play Civilization 5 as Jarad of Golgari Swarm - in Polish

After my fun "Let's Play Civilization 5 as Poland in Polish" series I wanted to do one more series in Polish, and I also wanted to play one more Civ5 game on Ravnica, so I did both those things at once and started a Polish Golgari game.

Here's playlist, and here's the first episode:

As usual schedule is one episode per day, at exactly the same time of day.

There are a few minor changes compared with Izzet campaign:
  • It's in Polish. For now I plan to keep the channel something like 80% English and 20% Polish, and all Polish stuff will be very obviously marked as such - as you can see from flag above.
  • I'm playing on Standard sized map with 8 civilizations, not obvious 10 civilizations on large map as before. 10 guilds is better flavor, but standard game speed is sort of balanced around standard map size, and increasing map size strongly implies bumping game speed to epic speed (or domination becomes really hard), which together would make campaign twice as long. I feel standard map speed/size lead to just better flowing campaign, at least as default.
  • I downgraded EUI to older version. New version unfortunately breaks a lot of mods. For some reason EUI authors don't provide links for downloading previous working version, in spite of new version being known broken, which goes very much against basic etiquette of all things software. I hereby denounce them for that. Fortunately I had old version saved locally.
  • As a result a few mods which were broken in Izzet campaign are working fine now - in particular More Luxuries mod.
  • I removed "Race for Religion" mod, as I'm playing with "New Beliefs Pack" mod, and it was silly to have both.
  • I manually fixed XP From Forts mod so it doesn't have crazy requirement that citizen needs to work citadel/fort tile (like that wasn't underpowered enough) and now I'm playing with it. It's been modestly useful, but nothing crazy.
Here's all guild mods:
Here's all other mods:

Other things I want to do on the channel

Right now the channel is fairly busy with 1 Factorio and 4 Civilization 5 series. Even counting Polish Civilization 5 as something separate, that's still a bit less diversity than I planned. Then again, I really wanted to play more Civilization 5 after that America campaign, and it's like the most recordable game ever.

So I'm planning to do a few more series for games other than Civilization 5, and I also want to do some non-gaming content.

An awkward side effect of this is that it's going to be a huge number of videos being published every day. Initially I just told youtube to autoannounce every video on my twitter, facebook, and google+ feeds, but that's getting a bit silly at this point due to volume of such automated announcements.

On the other hand, it's not like I have a better idea. But you should totally subscribe if you like my videos.

Oh and if anybody has any idea how to get channel art to be something more sensible than my Google profile pic + random landscape, please tell me.

Let's Play Civilization 5 on Ravnica as Niv Mizzet of Izzet League

The first time I played Civilization 5 I thought it's OK game, but nothing special. Gradually my attitude changed to something like this:

Yo dawg, I heard you like civ5...

So without waiting for other series to finish getting published, here's another one! Just like my previous series (Poland in Polish, America on Great Plains map, and China on China map) it's just a tiny bit gimmicky: we're playing with all 10 guilds of Ravnica on a large fractal map.

Here's episode one. Episodes will be released one a day at same time.

The playlist where they'll all get published is here. Or you could just follow my channel on youtube.

The goal is to take all 10 guild halls, get voted Supreme Ruler of Ravnica, or build a spaceship to Innistrad or some other plane. Well, technically culture victory is also a possibility, but it never seemed even remotely viable in any of my previous campaigns, so I don't normally give that much thought.

Our guild is Izzet League, led by great dragon Niv-Mizzet. All 10 guilds seem to be extremely powerful, so they're sort of balanced against each other, but would be somewhat overpowered mixed with regular civs.

Our uniques are:

  • All science buildings are upkeep free, give +1 gold, and +2 happiness
  • Izzet Boilerworks - factory replacement which doesn't require coal, and gives +4 science and +50% science
  • Hypersonic Dragon - basically medieval Helicopter Gunship, a Knight replacement with strength 20, movement 5, bonus vs mounted units, and hover. It can't take cities, and doesn't upgrade to anything.
Sounds pretty strong? Just watch the series to see what other guilds get. Their uniques gave me more trouble than I had from uniques in any other campaign (my suffering in America campaign was mostly self-inflicted).

In the campaign I play mostly decently (unlike in that America campaign...). There's a good deal of unwarranted arrogance which sometimes backfires, but I totally blame all that on roleplaying an elder dragon.

The mods for guilds are:
Other mods used:
There were a few issues with these mods:
  • New version of Extended User Interface has some absolutely dreadful default behaviour with dialogs autoclosing, I wanted to roll back to old version but that's extremely unsafe with civ5 mods, and can easily result in corrupted campaign impossible to continue (my Germany campaign was lost this way). Fortunately after the campaign I figured out how to turn off silly behaviour.
  • I have two mods changing religions - Race for Religions, and New Beliefs Pack. I planned to just go for one of them, but somehow I messed it up and it's another campaign with both. It was actually surprisingly good due to some other choices I made, but I'll make sure to pick just one in the future.
  • I used different mod for unit promotions, and I'm still really tempted to just write my own. Unless you know of another I should give a shot first.
  • Units donated by militaristic city states with 0xp feel worthless. Is there any mod that lets them have higher XP? I tried one that was supposed to give units 1xp/turn from just sitting in a citadel (until some maximum based on your tech), but it never worked.
  • Are there any mods which change puppet cities priorities to something more sensible (production focus instead of gold focus would be a good start)?
  • Are there any mods which fix priorities for tile expansions? The algorithm is completely ridiculous choosing featureless ocean tiles and tundra leading nowhere over strategic/luxury resource tiles, which requires a lot of money, but also a lot of tile assignment babysitting, which is not part of the game I enjoy particularly much and prefer to leave automated 90% of the time.
In any case, I had tons of fun, and I'll definitely start another civ5 campaign soon.

Let's Play Civilization 5 as Wu Zetian of China

My first Immortal difficulty campaign as America went to hell fast for self-inflicted reasons.

I thought I can do a lot better so I started another campaign just as I was done with America - their publication will overlap as I want to keep all my series to one episode per day, and I don't particularly want to delay this one.

So here's the new campaign as Wu Zetian of China. We're playing on China map, and I hand-picked three opponents - Sejong of Korea, Oda Nobunaga of Japan, Genghis Khan as Mongolia. Other four opponents are Casimir III of Poland, Montezuma of the Aztecs, Napoleon of France, and Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon.

That's my second campaign on immortal difficulty, and I'd say it went a lot better than the first one. There were some challenges and minor mistakes, but nothing on the scale of America campaign.

If you want to follow the series, here's the playlist to which episodes will be published, or simply follow my channel.

Mods used are nearly the same:
As for modding changes:
  • This time More Luxuries is working, as it was incompatible with Great Plains Plus map used in America campaign.
  • I wasn't totally convinced about Reform and Rule mod, but I didn't find a good replacement. I'm open to suggestions, but I don't want to go back to vanilla.
  • It turns out Race for Religions massively nerfs religions by moving all the good stuff to reformation beliefs, so religions are pointless if you don't take whole piety tree. I didn't realize that in my America campaign when I had no shot at religion game anyway, but I'm pretty sure I won't be using this mod in the future. Religions are already very weak, they don't deserve more nerfing. And it already overlaps with New Beliefs Pack (which adds more options without nerfing religions), so there's no reason to use both.
  • Promotions Pack - it has really good promotions for mounted units (+1 movement per level), and decent promotions for archers (they can get up to +2 range on very high levels, so by the time Archers become Gatling Guns they remain useful) and siege units (similar to archers, except they rarely get very far with levels), but it's really miserable for all other unit types, especially to Swordsmen-line units who never get anything good, and Pikemen and Tanks who both get far worse upgrades than mounted units. I'm seriously considering writing my own mod here.
Another minor thing - during America campaign I figured out how to make custom thumbnails for youtube videos. So now depending on game I might use that feature a lot. Civ5 really needs it, otherwise youtube just chooses diplomacy pics, which is fairly poor idea.

Let's Play Civilization 5 as America (in American)

After successful conclusion of my Polish campaign in Polish, I decided to continue the theme and I'm now starting American campaign in American, on America's home map of Great Planes Plus.

Here's campaign playlist, and here's first episode. New episodes of about 25-30 minutes each are going to be published one a day, at same time (11:00 London time).

Oh and quick warning - there's a lot of swearing for like two episodes when shit hits the fan :-p

Campaign difficulty is now on immortal difficulty level, plus some extra difficulty level introduced by a truly spectacular early game mistake. Just joking, America does not make mistakes, everything went just as planned all along.

The campaign uses mostly the same mods as before, with a few changes, mostly Reform and Rule (instead of Policy+) and Promotions Pack (which is really amazing).

Let's Play Civilization 5 as Poland in Polish - series conclusions

And so, in 45 episodes, the let's play series ended in great Polish victory.

The conclusions are mostly:

  • Playing in Polish and using mods are incompatible - I expected that extra stuff added by mods would have English names, but I didn't expect that for stuff that mods changed like social policies, game would display Polish vanilla text over English modded text, so it was totally incorrect, and I needed to have laptop opened next to the game on some forum post explaining how things work in the mod. It was horrible mess.
  • If I even get the idea of doing this again, it shouldn't be too hard to write a script to at least detect this kind of conflicts. There's still be the issue of stuff added by mods having English names, but I can live with that.
  • It was rather straightforward starting fairly early, so I could bump it one difficulty level for next campaign
  • Next Civilization 5 campaign (which just so happens to be starting today) is going to be in English, but I'll record some of the content in Polish in the future.
  • Fractal map was pretty cool. It's probably the best "default" map.

Let's Play Civilization 5 as Poland - in Polish

I tend to be pretty close to 100% English speaking online, but I wanted to record something in Polish - and what could be better than Civilization 5, the only game where Poland is the strongest country of all.

Of course I'm still not terribly happy about sudden death of my Germany campaign to save game corruption. I think the most likely explanation is that mods somehow got upgraded mid-campaign, which is something I might have clicked accidentally. I'll make extra sure not to do so this time.

Anyway, here's the playlist, and here's episode 1:

New videos, about 25 minutes each, are going to be posted once every day, on same time each day.

Tragic death of my Let's Play Civilization V as Germany series

So, this is awkward...

My Let's Play Civilization V as Germany series died a tragic death after 27 episodes due to save game corruption - game crashing to desktop on save game load. Not just the last save game is corrupt, quite a few saves and autosaves before it as well.

No idea what caused it, and the usual fixes like deleting game cache, reinstalling game and mods, and so on didn't work - I'm pretty sure save games are corrupted not game itself.

Earlier save games still work fine, but it would be a bit silly and confusing to redo already published episodes second time.

I'd say the series was fairly entertaining up to this point, with some very unusual strategies emerging that you don't normally see, and which are probably impossible on deity so I'd guess few other let's plays do this. By the time corruption happened I snowballed quite hard, so winning would only be a formality. So if you don't mind it ends abruptly at some point, enjoy the series anyway:

This isn't the first time I had Civ5 crashing, but previously workarounds (like deleting cache) worked.  It's rather discouraging to have campaigns completely corrupted, so I'll probably stop playing Civ5 and try something else instead.

Let's Play Civilization V as Germany

After very fun Korea science campaign, I decided to try run another campaign, this time domination campaign as Germany.

This time I even made introductory video, which of course contains a massive and highly embarrassing mistake, which I only figured by episode 14. Can you spot it faster? Awards possible.

Series is released one episode per day, same time of day (13:00 London time), about 25 minutes per episode.

I'm using the same mods as in Korea game:

Enjoy the game. I'm sure enjoying playing it.

Let's Play Civilization V as Shoshone - post-campaign retrospective

So I finished my first Let's Play campaign and I thought it's good time to have a retrospective on mods I used. It's not yet all uploaded, at my upload speeds it will take until next era for that to happen.

  • 3rd Unique Component and 4th Unique Component: Adds extra unique components to each civilization — I liked that. 3UC/4UC seem to be on fairly low power level, so there's nothing crazy, but they made civilizations a bit different. Definitely yes.
  • Capture+: Allows capturing all civilian units — I really liked how early game it hugely increased stakes with capturing settlers. Capturing great generals on the other hand, that's a bit silly. Probably yes, or something similar.
  • Caravansary Trade Routes: Adds extra trade route for each caravansery built — It makes wide empires somewhat better, it added too much busywork with trade routes for my taste. There's probably some strategy to exploit those extra trade routes hard, I just used them in most straightforward way. Probably no.
  • Civilization 5 Diplomacy Values: Displays numeric values of diplomatic modifiers — I'm not terribly familiar with how much AI cares about different things, so I definitely like that. Definitely yes.
  • Ethnic Units: Extra civilization specific textures for units — It doesn't matter, but it looked nice. Definitely yes.
  • InfoAddict: Displays more statistics — It was extremely useful, it's silly how base game. Definitely yes.
  • Less Warmonger Hate: Reduces warmonger penalties and makes them decay faster — Other civs seemed to hate me just fine in the end, and it felt reasonable mid game before I went on warmongering spree. Vanilla warmonger hate gets pretty extreme sometimes. Probably yes.
  • More Luxuries: Adds more unique luxury types — The biggest technical failure of the campaign, as I really needed this one, and it didn't actually work due to conflicts with Natural Wonder Overhaul. Definitely yes.
  • Natural Wonder Overhaul: Adds more natural wonders — It's a good idea, but it conflicts with much more important More Luxuries. Definitely no.
  • New Beliefs Pack: Adds more beliefs. — That made religion game much more interesting at no downside. Definitely yes.
  • PolicyPlus+: Rebalances social policies. — It's straight difficulty increase, as you no longer have easy access to overpowered policies, but it also makes weak policies more viable, so it's more interesting. Probably yes.
  • Promotion Melee Ranged Correction: Bugfix for some UU promotion upgrades — That applies to just a few UUs, and a few more 3UC/4UC UUs. I didn't play as any of them, so it didn't really matter, but I can't see why not. Definitely yes.
  • Scouts Ignore Borders: Lets scout units ignore borders — It was good for scouts and embarked scouts, and felt really silly for pathfinder I upgraded to composite bowmen in a goodie hut. On the other hand, how many such goodie huts you're going to find each campaign, 0-2? Quality of life is totally worth it. Probably yes.
  • Separate Great People Counters: Makes getting one kind of great person not screw up other great people. — Interface for it is really awkward, but it feels like a bugfix. Probably yes.
  • XP From forts: Units can get some XP while sitting in forts and citadels (up to cap) — I used it exactly zero times. I guess that's something I could use spare great generals for, especially to train donated city state units. It is annoyingly nerfed on epic speed (not like I used it), which I consider a mistake as such speeds are specifically for more military action, and this is already very weak. Probably yes.
  • Extended User Interface: So many UI fixes — I care about UI even more than Arumba. I should maybe make some videos for Paradox too. For Firaxis modders are doing just fine. Definitely yes.
  • Warlord happiness on higher difficulty levels — that's one thing I modded mid-game when I realized More Luxuries mod was not working. I feel it goes a bit too far maybe. I probably won't do it next time, but I might do something milder like +1 happiness for extra copy of each luxury resource beyond first.
Making this Let's Play series was a fun experience. Mistakes were made, but life is the real ironman mode. Audio quality started horrible as I tried various settings none of which worked for first 7 episodes, and ended up tolerable from episode 8 onwards, but still not quite as good as I'd like it to be.

I'm not sure yet what I'm going to let's play next, but that's definitely not my last series. If I revisit Civilization V again, I'll probably try higher difficulty level, and slightly different combination of mods.

Thanks for reading, and see you next time.

Let's Play Civilization V as Shoshone - my first experience with Let's Plays

I've been watching tons of Let's Plays, and eventually I decided I'm going to give it a try as well.

The first series I've made is Civilization V as Shoshone. It's 25 episodes in (a few still uploading as I'm writing this), and will probably end up at 40-something.

Recording setup

I thought about streaming, but my upload speed is so awful (at most expensive BT option available) that I don't think I'd even be able to do 720p, and I really dislike watching console quality 720p, so I'm not going to inflict that on anybody else.

I tried a few things, and Open Broadcaster Software seems to be working well enough - I had to increase bitrate a lot from its default low quality settings, but video quality was very good from episode one.

Audio was a much bigger problem. I tried to record a few videos with headset microphone, and it was just awful. So instead I got this Auna MIC-900 USB microphone. And it took a lot of tweaking to get the setup right, audio quality in the first 7 or so episodes is fairly poor - first I had microphone sensitivity too high, so there was constant background noise, then volumes between microphone and different parts of in-game audio (especially ambient sounds like cows mooing etc.) were misaligned, so it was difficult to hear me at times.

I think from episode 8 onwards audio quality is fine as well. It's not super amazing, as there's some background noise like computer fans, and a few times you can hear random sounds like Hangouts message incoming beep (which I eventually figured how to turn off on all devices) or courier buzzing.

One thing I definitely don't want is any kind of facecam. I always found them horribly distracting, and usually there's not even any good place to put them, as all of screen is used for game interface.

The game

Civilization V is a game I have mixed feelings about. Then again, my feelings about games range from outride hatred to ambivalence, so that's probably good :-). I like so much of what they've done, but I was never happy about its happiness system, and how everybody felt depressed if you play anything except very tall game while prioritizing happiness over everything. There's also a bunch of minor things I wanted to change, like balancing social policy trees, and making civilizations more distinct from each other.

Fortunately Civilization V has Steam Workshop support, so it's very easy to install a bunch of mods, and I thought they'd fix all my problems. Unfortunately it turns out the mod I wanted most of all - extra luxury resources - conflicted with another mod I added, and in the end we're back to vanilla happiness mechanics I loathe. So I did what I always do, and modded the game halfway through by setting Warlord level happiness in otherwise King difficulty game. I'm not entirely sure if that was sensible or not.

Publishing videos

I haven't given that much thought. I just use my normal Youtube account (liked with my Google account), I made one playlist, and I just add videos to it as they get uploaded.

They get pretty straightforward titles, one line description, and autosuggested tags.

One thing everybody else is doing that I haven't figured out how yet is to upload a bunch of videos in advance and automatically release them once a day or so - it's really not practical for recording and publication to be in sync, especially if I want to watch the videos before publishing them.

I just use Youtube upload feature on its website, nothing fancy. Due to my horribly upload speeds, it's taking forever, but I'm not going to downgrade to 720p or do anything awful like that.

Future plans

I hope this Let's Play series is entertaining, but it's really mostly just a test to figure out all technical details. I'm not sure where to go from there. I'll definitely record a few more games - just not CK2/EU4, that takes forever, and a lot of time would be spent on alt-tabbing to spreadsheets and such.

I might record a few videos in Polish - it's weird how little I actually speak Polish these days.

One obvious thing to do is record some programming videos, but that would require a different setup, as I really don't want to program on Windows 7 machine I do gaming and recording on.

In any case, it's been tons of fun so far. I doubt any of the videos I make will ever be popular, but as long as I'm entertained and a few people watching them are entertained, it's all good.

Content ID bullshit

Oh yeah, and I already got into Content ID bullshit. Apparently 32 seconds of one 27 minute episode matches "Light Wave - Abaji" playing in the background, and that makes youtube put ads on that episode, with money to be paid to APM Music.

There's similar automatic claim on 3 other episodes for "Blackfoot Nights - Global Journey".

Fuck Youtube for this kind of bullshit. There's not one shred of proportionality here. Sadly they have sort of monopoly on internet video. Imagine if some site like let's say imgur had similar level of power over internet images, and Content ID'd them and then put ads on the images. It's not anywhere remotely reasonable, but monopoly is monopoly and we can't do anything about it, other than turn off all in-game music (which is already paid for when purchasing the game).

So I decided to give Civilization 5 another try, on King difficulty level as Arabia.
• Pangea Plus is a horrible map generator - it puts all civilizations on one continent (what I wanted, didn't feel like exploring oceans), and every single city state gets its own separate tiny island. So basically if you don't start near the coast, you won't meet city states for 200+ turns, and that means much less diplomacy, no missions etc. I picked "Pangea Plus" because it had "Plus" in the title, what I really wanted was regular "Pangea".
• I restarted like 20 times before I got desert start. Not because it's any easier (deserts normally suck), but I really wanted to see what was the big deal with Desert Folklore + Petra. Arabia is supposed to have desert bias - didn't seem like it. Some of the starts had at least some deserts, many were jungle, or coastland, or tundra etc. For most civilization it's fine, but Venice without coast is basically autoloss.
• Even with Raging Barbarians turned off, barbarians seem to be raging a lot harder than on Prince.
• War is hard. I attacked France, had to white peace (I killed their settler at least, that was good). Then England attacked me, lost all their units, sold me York in peace deal (and it's such a shitty city...). Then Arabia attacked me, lost all their units, paid me off with ton of gold. All AI-vs-AI wars ended up with no cities changing hands, and it's been 200 turns already. Seriously underwhelming.
• The only wonder I took was Petra. Perhaps I should try to get some more. I can always conquer a few capitals where the wonders are located instead of trying to race for them. Paris unfortunately is far too well defended by mountain chains to capture it, but Lisboa, London, and Tenochtitlan are soft targets.
• I managed to settle next to 2 natural wonders, and there's 3rd sitting between me and France waiting for it. That was some nice luck, or AI just doesn't prioritize natural wonders much. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing - these spots weren't really great other than for the wonder.
• Faith game generated a lot of happiness by purchasing pagodas. It seems like almost everybody got their own religion, but mine seems to be most popular globally. I'm not totally convinced desert start and rushing desert folklore + Petra was really worth it, and if it wouldn't be better to just get a regular start and rush something else useful.
• I'm not sure what kind of victory condition I want. I could conquer a bunch of capitals, but the map is just massive, with 8 civilizations instead of 6 I'm used to play. I can't do city state game since so far I've only seen one, with island really close to the coast.
• One unit per tile fighting against stupid AI is actually more fun when they have 3x as many units as you. On Prince they only had 2x, and it was just too easy.
• My spy sucks. He reported Aztecs are trying to attack England (who was weakest after losing all their units in attack against me), they attacked me instead.
• Cheaty AI doesn't exactly make me happy, but it's possible to adapt to it - for example since AI has science headstart, caravans and spies work to your advantage by leeching their tech, on Prince you couldn't really do it (except I pretty much caught up by turn 200).

So the campaign continues.

There's a nice trick with reducing warmongering penalty - cities you get in a peace deal don't count. So York and Braga I took without any Agressive Expansion, I mean infamy, I mean warmongering penalty.

You can't take capitals in a peace deal, so if you want domination victory, that's the only way. Story of the game so far:
• French attacked me - I couldn't maneuver enough to take their cities, so I white peaced
• English attacked me - it was pretty weak, and they gave me York for the trouble. It was really shitty in the middle of a jungle, but that turned into massive science bonuses once I built university there.
• Aztecs attacked me - not losing Baghdad was the hardest part of the game.
• I finally got Camel Archers, and they're OP like hell. I attacked Portugal, but didn't have any melee units to finish the deal
• Just one turn before I could take Lisboa and get Braga in a peace deal, Aztecs attack me again in Najran. It was easier than the last time since I had money to quick buy walls, Najran was on hills, and all my units were rushing in a few turns since my other war was getting finished (and 2 units I sent way North to clear Barbarian camp were returning too - that was retrospectively a mistake, and I should have left them in Najran and Kufah).
• I couldn't take any cities from the Aztecs since my happiness was at -17 immediately after peace deal with Portugal, so I just took ton of gold and some sugar from them. Happiness management is the most important skill in the game.
• Aztecs are obviously gathering armies again to strike at me, I want to preempt that, and get Teotihuacan in a peace deal. It has some horses, of which I have shortage, and it's on my way.
• After that I want to take London and Tenochtitlan by force.
• That's still only 4/8 capitals, so very far away from domination victory. Playing with 6 civilizations on one level smaller map was just way easier. Paris and Washington would be a big stretch to take (and both are friendly to me, and give me ton of money from caravals, so I don't even want to fight them anytime soon), and Rio de Janeiro and  Addis Ababa are way too far to even ponder that.
• I'll need to build some ships to find all the city states. So far I've only found two.
• I don't have to go for domination. I have tech lead, so presumably I could go for science victory. Or by just having largest empire I could still go for diplomatic victory. I'm not even sure how cultural victory works. (time victory by high score obviously turned off because it's stupid)
• My religion is comfortably dominant worldwide. Portugal used to be Catholic, now they are almost all Zoroastrian. Aztecs will be forced into it too. French Buddhism never spread anywhere, Americans, Brazilians, and English have no religion, so it just leaves Ethiopians with somewhat successful spread. I guess I could conquer France just for the sake of religious dominance, but I'm not sure what would be the benefit of that. It's hard to get to conquest of France without first settling a city in a path from Damascus to Paris/Lyon - there's one natural wonder there, but it's not very good otherwise.
• By the time my totally overpowered Camel Archers get obsolete, I'll have Artillery, so no cities will ever be safe from me.

Civilization 5 has much more interesting late game than most strategy games.

I crushed Aztecs - they didn't want to give me city I wanted in a peace deal, so I just conquered it and then their capital in one war. I wonder if different AIs have different levels of willingness to pay to peace out (they were willing to give me a smaller city, but that would be fairly useless). Then I shifted all my troops East, and built a town of Basra on my way to France, just in case I need it - turned out later it had coal, so it wasn't a total waste.

I had very good relations with Americans all the game, unfortunately they settled Chicago blocking my way to York (and in the future London) - I bought all the tiles I could, then set up citadel to steal the rest, so now the whole way is under my control, but that pissed them off to no end.

Same turn, Americans and Brazilians, 2nd and 3rd strongest civilizations, declared war on me simultaneously. That's the kind of stuff that makes end game potentially interesting.

I'm far better prepared for this war than for any of my previous wars, since I was expecting one of them to attack me. Well, they both did instead, but that's fine too. Unfortunately my Camel Archers are getting a bit obsolete now (I could upgrade them to Cavalry, but that's a shitty unit), and Americans spammed their unique unit Minuteman. At least Brazilians sent some really obsolete units instead.

I'm not sure what would be good war goals. Chicago definitely needs to burn - it's an extremely annoying worthless city with no resources and very little land. Philadelphia I'd definitely want, just as New York, and then Washington (they can keep Boston and Atlanta).

I don't really have any reason to fight Brazilians - Belo Horizonte is nothing special, but it can get dyes, horses (a bit late for that now), and would be of some value if I wanted to go against Americans or France. If they'd give me early white peace after losing a bunch of units, I'll definitely take it.

I'd prefer a short war, since for the next one (25-40 turns) I'll be able to put Artillery on the frontline, and some Riflemen to protect it. If the war keeps dragging itself, I can make that the last war of course, but AI in Civ5 is not Empire: Total War kind of suicidal and eagerly peaces out wars it's losing badly.

Once that clears out, I have reasonably clear path towards domination, science, and diplomatic victories.

Also for a while France was gathering its troops next ot my capital - I though they'll attack me with a rush of obsolete units, but they attacked Portugal instead, and got beaten pretty badly. I should probably punish them for such shenanigans and take Paris, but my troops are pretty busy at the moment.

Civ 5: Arabia campaign

So one thing I didn't notice was that my citadel was in Chicago's firing range, so I couldn't just safely keep my units there. Fortunately AI is far too dumb to pillage it, so it kept getting hit my it. Another thing I didn't notice was that I was way way behind everybody else on soldiers - I'm 5th on ranking, with what to me seemed like the most effective army in the world (and which got subsequently confirmed)

Anyway, AI swamped me with their troops - York's surroundings were totally overran from all direction, and I just had one low level Camel Archer there. Fortunately I was able to quick buy the walls three turn into the war. Chicago was just as full of American soldiers, while Brazilians mostly tried to get to Basra - at least that was really unsuccessful for them due to Brazil being behind on military tech, but they eventually pillaged road to Basra, being massive paint in the ass.

AI was really bad at coordinating attack on York - it was definitely within takable range if it was smarter. I focused first on conquering and burning down Chicago, then just on murdering waves after waves of units AI was throwing at me - especially those that prevented relieving York. I very slowly pushed them back, without too much loses (except my whole fleet of 2 Caravels exploring the world - that was unsalvageable), eventually getting Philadelphia.

Then when I was going for Belo Horizonte and New York, the game decided to be an ass and made roads not work properly. For Brazil that's because they have Great Wall (visually it looks like it applies to city it's in, but it's actually for whole civilization), and it doesn't matter that I invented Dynamite - it only matters that they didn't yet. For Americans, I'm not really sure. Maybe cross-border bridges don't count even when road is on both sides? Movement costs in this game generally don't always work as expected, and game engine sometimes draws roads where there are none and has other visual glitches!

Either way, it was really hard to proceed while Artillery was slowly constructed - fortunately Ethiopia and France ganged up upon Brazil and took one of its isolated cities. It took some really slow manoeuvring to be able to take Belo Horizonte - but that convinced Brazil to peace out by paying me some gold, and that in turn convinced abandoned Americans to surrender New York for peace. New York would be extremely hard to take, except for my first Artillery which was slowly making its way toward the frontlines.

Conquering 3 cities and burning 1 was more than I planned to get in this way, but then it took extremely long time to go that far. This resulted in -11 happiness, which took forever and a bunch of rebellions to get back in order. Maybe I should a bunch of turn with war ongoing before I accepted American peace offer, since New York with full undamaged population was just causing ridiculous amount of unrest.

By the way if rebels ever pillage the road from my capital to the rest of my empire, that will give me instant -220 gold and -20 happiness, and it will be pretty much instant game over with rebels spawning, cities rebelling, and bankruptcy disbanding my units right all over the place. That shows how stupid road mechanics in Civ5 are. It's just one tile pillaged to do that kind of damage, and I have no control over where rebels spawn. And it's not just theoretical - I just barely stopped rebel unit that spawned exactly there from pillaging it - one turn earlier, and it would be the dumbest game over ever.

Now that I have happiness in order, I could go attack London or Washington. A big problem are city states I want to ally for bonuses and votes. Current counts are:

• America - 6 (and they're host of world council for +2 votes)
• me - 3
• Ethiopia - 2 (and they also have Forbidden Palace for +2 votes)
• Brazil 2
• France - 1
• Aztecs - 1
• Portugal - 0
• England - 0

I'm so far behind mostly because I was landlocked, and it took me that long to even meet them. Since I have so few votes, world congress managed to do stupid things like banning Furs (which only I have - I stole them from Portugal via citadel, and now they're useless). At least I managed to make Zoroastrianism world religion, but then everybody except France and Ethiopia follows it (Portugal and Aztecs fully converted by now), so it doesn't give me much benefit (in fact it makes diplomatic victory even harder since I get 2 votes for, then they get 5x2 votes against).

The hardest part is now behind me, so the question is now mostly how to effectively achieve some kind of victory. London and Washington are very takable, and Paris only slightly less so, which would bring me to 6/8 capitals, but the last two would be massive pain. An organized bribery campaign could get me majority of votes in world council, but right now Americans have just ridiculously high relations with most of their allies. Science victory by building spaceship is just too far away, and I still have no idea how culture victory works (I got antiquity sites uncovered, but I can't build archeological digs there).

I guess I could conquer 3 remaining American cities with relative ease, killing my main competitor to diplomatic victory, and then easily win diplomatically. I'm not sure if my happiness will be able to survive that. I don't want to be 1 tile pillage away from losing the game again.

On the other hand Washington has a huge ton of world wonders for the taking. Meanwhile London is really easy, but it doesn't have anything good in it, so it's only worth something if I was going for domination victory, which I'm not sure of.

Civilization 5: Arabia campaign (King)

I've built my 3rd Factory and that let me adopt an ideology and get 2 free policies in it - taking Order with Socialist Realism and Young Pioneers gave me instant +40 happiness or so, and it was thus time for some war.

London fell in 2 turns to Artillery fire (they are damn overpowered), then I took Nottingham for no particular reason - they just didn't feel like peacing out, and I had massive happiness, so I might just as well. Then I moved my troops to American border, at the same time doing diplomatic campaigning of bribes, election rigging, coups, and doing various quests to get as many city states on my side as possible.

War with America was much slower, as I overextended myself a bit trying to take 3 cities, plus some navy from Hong Kong just a bit off the coast joining on their side. Atlanta fell, and as they lost all units they decided to cut the loses and give me Boston for a truce. There was also a ton of fighting in the sea between city states allied with me and city states allied with America (as well as some Americans ships), but none of that had any serious consequences.

Brazil then suicidally decided to attack me in Belo Horizonte a few turns after I peaced out America. Sure, my armies will take a few turns to get there, but I'm still at +22 happiness so there's no way they're keeping all their cities. They only have Cannons (vs my Artillery - that unfortunately also means their Great Wall is still working, but it matters less now since I can just shoot from with Artillery from outside their range) and Riflemen for melee, while I mostly rely on Cavalry which in 7 turns will turn into armored units.

I've actually seen their troops moving around Fortaleza a few turns before, but I didn't move my armies back as I thought AI wants to do the rational thing and attack weakened America or maybe turn South towards France - I did not expect them to attack me. I wish I had the option to confront AI about troop movements just as AI has the option to confront me about it.

I only have 1 Camel Archer left - I lost some in two wars, and upgraded others to Cavalry (unfortunately contrary to what Internet claimed, BNW did not fix the problem of terrain promotions not working on change from missile to melee units - well, as far as I can tell at least), and even so obsolete it's still an amazing unit and I wish I could build more. Maybe unique units should be buildable forever if someone so desires? Civ5 modding seems fairly simple, but I never really tried it, just looked at some code briefly.

I also have 3 Great Generals and I don't really know what to do with them - I plan to conquer Washington, and possibly everything on the way to Rio de Janeiro, so there's no point popping any Citadels there - and there's nothing interesting to steal on my other borders.

Victory progress:
• domination: 4/8 capitals
• diplomatic - 14/33 necessary votes
• science - still 19 techs away from all space ship parts, but I'm leading in tech
• culture - no idea how that even works

Area of all 3 wars should be visible on the map.

Civilization 5 BNW: Arabia campaign (King)

Just a turn after Brazil attacked me, France joined the war too. I tried to use Cavalry offensively, which turned out to be a huge mistake - melee units move forward to the spot formerly occupied by killed unit, which usually means they can't get out and get shot at from multiple directions with flanking penalty to make matters worse - and Cavalry doesn't even get terrain bonuses. I wish I could keep making Camel Archers, obsolete or not. No big deal, Landships were coming soon, and then Tanks were not that far away.

Even together, Brazil and France didn't have much chance of overwhelming my defences anywhere, but then I didn't have any good way of striking back. Another problem was that I was spending all resources on war effort, so I couldn't do much city state diplomacy and I was slowly losing my allies.

Then unfortunately my easy guaranteed victory was spoiled when Brazil invented Flight, quickly started spamming Bombers and Fighters, and killing my units one by one. I rushed to build my own air force, but before I could get that done every single unit anywhere near Belo Horizonte-Fortaleza frontline was destroyed.

At least my war against France was going really well. 2 Artillery and 2 Landships were completely sufficient to destroy all French armies, take Paris, and then some time later Lyon. I focused on stalling Brazilian front while I was winning war with France - building intercepting Fighters (no Bombers), anti-aircraft guns and so on - it was pointless to keep throwing unit after unit at them as long as their had air superiority, but they were nowhere near strong enough to take the offensive. Then and as soon as France peaced out, Brazil decided it's time to bail out as well, and just handed over Fortaleza to me.

I'm currently at only +6 happiness, of which -28 I'm getting from dissidents - somehow people prefer Brazilian Autocracy to my Order, and I don't really understand how it works. It might have something to do with tourism maybe? Brazil is supposedly tourism-oriented.

I plan to have the final war against America soon, since they have just their capital remaining. My happiness is very low, but they have 11 wonders in their capital, so presumably that will balance out negative happiness (and American happiness is totally over the top ridiculous). If all these wonders could also get rid of that ridiculous -28 dissidents penalty it would be even better. The faster I win this war the better - once they research airforce, it will get a lot harder. Not that much harder, since there's only so fast you can build units in one city, but harder.

I'm even tempted to attack right away with just one Tank, one Artillery, and one Great General. It sounds ridiculously small, but then French army fell was completely crushed by not much larger force in much more difficult territory.

There's probably some way around it dissidents, but without much understanding of tourism system my best bet is to send my tanks on a guided tour. Maybe spamming archeologists would help? Who knows.

Most of the fighting took place on very narrow corridor between Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza, and in another narrow corridor between Basra, Lyon, and Paris - with mountain range separating two fronts. A few random units managed to find their way through jungles, hills, and marshes and got to New York, but that small reserve I left there just in case Americans got any ideas was enough to dispatch them very efficiently.

Victory progress:
• domination - 5/8
• diplomatic - 14/33

Civilization 5: Arabia campaign (King) - domination victory by turn 382

War against Americans wasn't too difficult, except they settled another Chicago really far to the West, on pretty much the Westernmost tip of Pangea even, near Tenochtitlan. So of course I had to burn that one as well, eliminating Americans from the game. Other civilizations I'm happy to leave there, but Americans had far too much city state influence for that.

Finally my efforts to outtourist Brazil became successful and I got up to +57 happiness. Next turn after that tourism win I invented Radar and upgraded all my 2 Bombers and 5 Fighters. That's as good as air superiority I'll ever have, especially with 2 Anti-Aircraft Guns sitting next to my 3 artillery, in a Citadel I built on Brazilian border. Without competition from Americans, I could get pretty much all the city states I wanted as well, so there was no risk from that direction.

Meanwihle AI entertained itself with petty wars like Brazil-Ethiopia and Aztecs-Portugal, with little hope of any of them getting anywhere. (Brazil actually took Harar)

Anyway, the big war. Annoyingly, Brasilia collapsed right away on the first turn, taking 2/5 of Brazilian airforce with it, making my careful positioning pretty much completely pointless. Next turn I took Sao Paulo, and his 3rd air unit with it, cutting Brazil in half, while making my positioning really awkward, with Artillery far behind frontlines, air force damaged, and Tanks isolated in front lines.

So I pulled my troops forward, and my anti-aircraft guns shot down their Bomber, leaving them with just 1 remaining air unit. It turns out they got Artillery now as well, so danger zone around cities is now a lot larger, but it's not a huge deal, and they had very few Artillery units (well, just 1 that shot at me, not sure if there were more elsewhere). A few turns later I took Salvador, attacking it with heavily damaged airforce and losing one of my Bombers in process, but it was worth it, since it's adjacent to Addis Ababa - Ethiopian capital.

I let Brazil live taking Harar in the peace deal - a small city they stole from Ethiopia just before our war (and one of the reasons why Brazilian territory was so underdefended - their armies were mostly down there in Harar), and proceeded to burn it right away. Now I could try to come with some fancy victory conditions, but by then I had 7/8 capitals, and all my troops with really good access to weakly defended Ethiopian capital.

Two turns, and it was all over. Harar didn't even finish burning out. 7 turns later I'd finish both Manhattan Project and Nuclear Fission research simultaneously, and I could start building nukes, just in case my campaign needed that extra final push.

Retrospectively, it was the most fun campaign I had in Civ5. AI had obvious massive cheaty bonuses of the kind that usually annoy me, and then it was also obviously stupid to let me balance that out. It was happy to start a war when it sensed an opportunity (unlike Paradox games, where AI is far too timid for optimal enjoyment level), but also knew when to cut the loses and accept peace deal a unfavourable terms instead of prolonging the war unnecessarily (unlike Total War games, where AI fights to the death every time, no exceptions).

I'm not sure if it was more King difficulty level, or more using 8-civilization rather than 6-civilization map that made campaign longer and more challenging. It's a lot better than my first impressions of Civ5 were, but then I feel I've had enough for now, and I don't really feel like playing more of it anytime soon.

My biggest mistakes:
• Using Pangea Plus map generator instead of Pangea - placing every city state on own tiny island removes a lot of diplomacy from the game
• Having military maybe 2-4 units too small to discourage AI attacks early on, and then sending 2 of my units to clear out Barbarian camp mid-war with Portugal - which resulted in retrospectively unsurprising Aztec attack.
• Ignoring obvious military buildups near my borders, assuming they go for another AI. That's actually what France - grouped their troops near my capital, which I reinforced, and then proceeded to attack Portugal. I expected Brazil to attack Americans the same way, so I did not reinforce (even though it would have been trivial), and they attacked me instead.
• Taking cities my happiness level would not let me take. I was one rebel spawn away from losing the campaign once, since pillaged road from the capital is nearly instant campaign loss (this is shitty design, but what can I do about that). If I waited a turn or two, maybe I could get my happiness buffer high enough to avoid rebels completely. This doesn't apply when the capital is coastal - then redundant connections are very cheap, so there's little risk of getting -20 happiness and -200 gpt from one tile pillage, followed by inevitable chain collapse.
• Not realizing how powerful air units are against unprotected armies - all my previous campaigns were over before AI could build any. To be fair, I learned that really quickly and combined operations of airforce, artillery, and tanks was how I was able to take over Brazil and Ethiopia so quickly.

And some puzzles:
• I think I screwed something hard with faith, since I was overflowing with faith points for second half of the game, with my religion dominant pretty much everywhere, and nothing really to show for this effort.
• I got massive dissidents penalty to happiness somehow caused by Brazilian tourism pressure. How exactly that works is a bit mysterious, only with massive spending to get tourism running I was able to stop that.

Civilization 5 England Campaign AAR

So I decided to go for a quick  #civ5  campaign as England, King, standard map size, small continents, random map settings, to maybe trying some naval game for a change since I usually play on Pangea style maps.

Does not look like it. Portugal is way too close to me for comfort, and Polish settler is literally next to the spot I sent my first settler to, one turn later and it would be too late. I'm not entirely sure if that's the best place for a city - that hill next to sheep would be better defensively, but 1 fish + 3 crab with a Lighthouse sounds pretty good and I'm sort of considering going exploration at some point so I'd like my cities coastal.

Opening was scout, shrine (I took belief for 15% faster border growth, nothing really seemed particularly useful), worker (nothing to steal nearby), settler, archer. I'm really tempted to just spam archers, get one melee unit as soon as I have some tech, and rush Portugal now, eliminating them from the game, warmonger or not. I'm not really sure how viable this early rush is without any unique units or other bonuses, and terrain isn't terribly friendly for that.

I started that civ5 campaign as England, and then I had no time to continue... I decided to play a few turns just to remind myself what was going on. Oh yeah, I stopped just before fun stuff started happening.

• DoW Poland
• Build city (in this order, so their warrior&settler won't get bounced making capture way harder)
• Bombard their warrior&settler
• Move my warrior south to make sure they don't escape
• Instant buy Archer in my new city
• a few turn later warrior is dead, and I have a new worker

And what's that? Portugal is sending unprotected settler to found a city between London and York? That's just silly, second DoW, capture (I accidentally attacked that settler with my archer, DoWing during attack, but that only shot arrows at it, wut? I had to reload to start of turn, DoW from menu, then attack).

So Portugal and Poland are both down a settler, and I have 3 workers now including one I legitimately built. That doesn't really put me ahead, just makes sure I'm not behind since AI on King gets so pretty big bonuses. Poland might plausibly have another settler down there, as they only have their capital, so I guess I could send my troops there for more.

There's a mod which makes captured settlers stay settlers. If I played with that I'd be so far ahead right now... But the only mod I'm using here is InfoAddict.

Sadly I probably won't have much time for this campaign anytime soon anyway.

Civ5 England campaign (King)

Poland founded second city, so there was no point harassing them further. Instead I sent all my troops (3 Archers, 1 Warrior) against Portugal, mostly to harass them, since I didn't really have much hope of taking over any of their cities.

Then I decided it's time to do some trading, and since Portugal had triremes which could be nasty I peaced them out. That locked out my Warrior on wrong side of border - and he doesn't have embark yet as I only just got optics. There are no transport ships, so he'll stay there until another war with Portugal, or until I disband it, unless Portugal expands its borders to cover all of that land, presumably bouncing it all the way west then.

I'm not terribly enthusiastic about my 3rd city, and I really have no idea where to put my 4th (even less any good places for 5th and 6th). Is this isthmus south from Panama City with 4 bananas, 2 fish, and 1 clam (and 2nd already in range from York) in range any good? It would have ton of food and some late game science, but no production to speak of.

Settling east along that York river was my original idea (probably on that hill on river's south side - still feels safer than plains north of river wrt potential Polish attack), which would be ton of river tiles, 1 banana, 1 sheep, and 1 wheat. No new unique luxes anywhere except 1 fur 4 tiles from London, it will expand there eventually, it's extremely weak place for new city.

Alternatively my embarked scout could discover something nearby, solving my problem.

Anyway, it feels good to be stronger than any nearby AI, even if I'm probably far behind AIs on different continents.

• I disbanded scout as there are no landmasses reachable by just coastal travel
• I tried to get Great Lighthouse, someone took it while I was a few turns in
• My trade route to Panama City got plundered by pirates pretty much right away... seriously? I sent it there instead to another civ to make it safe in case of war.
• I'll finish National College in 2 turns
• Poland settled 3rd city somewhat close to that hill where I sort of wanted my city to be, but not crazy close
• Portugal sent another unprotected settler towards me... Yeah, like I'll allow that.
• It doesn't feel like I'm making much progress here, but I'm pretty bad at judging this.
• At least York is as good as I hoped it would be.

• I got another settler - I can either build city now and buy my way to bananas for 200 gold (and sit at -4 happiness for a while), or wait, but then my cities are growing pretty fast, so I might never get my way out of negative happiness
• I have a decent shot at building Oracle, and I want to go Exploration with that free for flavor reasons. Should I go something else instead like commerce or liberty?
• I want to build Circus Maximus in London, but that's many Colossea away, especially if I build that new city.

Every time I play this game, I feel happiness mechanic is artificial and obnoxious, especially at punitive levels human player has to deal with, while AI gets much more sensible levels, where it has impact but doesn't make the whole game all about this one mechanic.

I could lower difficulty all the way, but then AI is a bit too much of a pushover. Maybe I should mod "King except for Chieftain happiness" difficulty level into the game? Mid-campaign?

So I reconsidered a few things - I enjoy this game a lot, except for happiness bullshit... so I midgame modded happiness back to warlord level (12 base, 75% from cities and pops). AIs are still playing with 12 base, 54% from cities and pops, so I'm playing the hard way, relatively speaking. Happiness is still something I need to care for (I prioritize all happiness wonders and buildings pretty much everywhere, and I'm only in single digits up), but it's no longer ridiculously punitive.

I guess I could give AI some extra happiness as well to keep things fair, but then it wouldn't really matter either way. Sure, it makes game a bit easier, but fun is the key, and happiness management was the least fun part for me. I might try emperor with warlord happiness next campaign (AI would be down from 56% to 51% unhappiness).

Anyway, with 3 Longbows and 1 Trireme conquering Lisbon was really easy - and another Trireme is exploring the world now. I got a lot wonders in London, and Portugal even finished Petra two turns before I captured it.

Warsaw has Great Wall, so I sort of want it now. I'm not totally sure if my longbowmen can shoot over jungle tiles into Lodz, it's not artillery so they need full line of sight. Of course I could harass Poland until it gives me Lodz peacefully, then take Warsaw next war.

I didn't get any mass denunciations after I captured Lisbon - so I guess most civs never met Portugal, and so they don't know they ought to decounce me for that warmongering. Hopefully they don't know Poland either, as Poland is on the east coast, and all of them are to the west.

I'm not sure which victory condition this is heading towards. I got exploration for extra naval movement/LOS, and +3 production in every coastal city.

Civilization 5 England campaign (happy King):

After being really late to religion party I got Great Prophet from Hagia Sophia, founded very late religion, and Tithe and Pagodas were still available. A few turns later I got legitimate Great Prophet (now at 300 instead of 200 faith) and grabbed Divine Inspiration (+2 faith / wonder) and religious texts.

Conquering Poland is surprisingly hard, as Warsaw has light of sight blockers from every direction. First war I could shoot Warsaw from one hill, but they chickened out and gave me Lodz, which I promptly razed, giving me second hill to shoot Poland from. As soon as truce timer expired, second war, still extremely awkward, but they gave me Krakow this time. I'll probably have to put my units in harm's way the next time, since that's still only 2 hills I can shoot from.

During my first war I managed to plunder two trade route with my Trireme turn one for +400 gold. So sweet. So far I lost one Trireme to Poland, and 2 cargo ships to pirates. Totally my fault all that. There was blatant barb camp on the way westward from York/Nottingham to Denmark. It's still standing, empty, since my ships can't raze it. And that Trireme died to bombardment (which was safe, it couldn't kill me and I could pillage next turn) followed by Polish Composite Bowmen I disregarded in my reasoning. Oh well, it will teach me next time, it ended up being fairly inconsequential.

I'm definitely going against Poland for the 4th and presumably final time, not sure what to do next. Since I have Universities that jungle isthmus city with 4 bananas and 2 fish looks really tempting.

My happiness is overflowing, which is no surprising as I turned unhappiness down to 75%, but then I'm still doing everything to generate more happiness just in case (wonders, luxes, pagodas, exploration policy that gives happiness for each naval building etc.). I probably overdid that, if I play the next time I'll set it to 85% or so maybe. 100% makes the game all about happiness, so I definitely don't want to go that high.

Not sure which victory condition I'm going for. I got to Printing Press first, so that sets me up for nice diplomatic victory, and I think I'm leading on science so that might work as well. Or since I already have 2 capitals, I'm taking Warsaw anyway, and most other capitals are coastal, I might spam ships of the line and go for domination instead.

Most civs dislike me, but I got declaration of friendship from Egypt somehow.

I finished off Poland, losing just one Swordsman - I forgot bananas don't have any plunderable structures on them - I keep making small tactical blunders like that a lot, but they don't matter all that much.

I also built that 4 bananas 3 sea resources city I planned for half the game now.

Not sure where to go next with all that. Alexander and Ramses seem to be OK with my warmongering, only Dido is really bitchy, but Dido is not a threat. I could easily take Copenhagen - it's just across narrow sea from York, but that's fairly pointless unless I commit myself to domination victory.

I'm ahead on pretty much everything, so I could just take my time and win by science or diplomacy. I doubt AI would be able to pull off naval invasion of my continent, not in normal circumstances, and here from that far, against my stacked bonuses between English UA, both English UUs, and exploration? Simply not happening. Maybe they could settle a city on my continent and start from there, but that's still an extremely unlikely shot.

Last time I said there's no way AI could launch naval invasion from across the world, and the only chance it has is settling some cities on my continent and launching invasion from there at some point. Apparently Alexander follows me on G+ and he's doing exactly that. I don't really care for these city spots - I had to rush buy bananas for Canterbury, and Krakow lost potential fish, but it's really not a big deal.

I basically need to decide if I want to go for domination or not. Right now I have friendships with Alexander and Ramesses, and I'm science leader, so if I want to go peaceful, nobody can really backstab me, but Alexander could maybe outvote me? He just finished Forbidden Palace and has loads of city state buddies.

If I go for war, I can either attack Alexander's tiny cities (but then I could have attacked his settlers and didn't - I'm getting really soft), or go for Denmark's capital as that's going to be easiest.

I never did any major naval warfare, and I never did science victory, so both have some appeal.

It's also my last chance to build Longbowmen before they get obsolete. Range 2 Gatling Guns are just infinitely better than range 1 Gatling Guns.

Copenhagen was just way too tempting, troops I sent were massive overkill too - and more are on the way. Harald still not wanting to peace out, but he'll figure out that he lost. No idea why so many of Alexander's troops are in the area.

Next Dido or Montezuma. Montezuma's capital looks pretty hard to take by sea, so I guess I could take Texcoco first, and take Tenochtitlan by land instead?

I could bribe some local city states to provide support too, I'm making quite a bit of money.

No idea how to take on the last two civs - they'll probably have Flight by the time I get from 4 to 6 capitals, so it will be much harder.

I paid Alexander to declare war on Rasesses to make them both busy while I'm dealing with minor civs. Harald didn't accept white peace, but a few turns later it have me Kaupang voluntarily for free. Danes are weird. Oh well, it's a nice city on a way towards Montezuma and Dido.

Dido had a ton of ships, but mostly Caravels, and they weren't too hard to dispatch - I lost a captured Galleas and Keshik donated by a city state, but captured 2 Caravels, so it was net about even. She was pretty resigned after losing Cartage and Saguntum, and even offered me Hippo Regius, but that's really far and really pointless, so I let her get away with giving me some some gold.

Screenshots:
• Captured Dido's cities, and Montezuma's cities soon to join them.
• Game thinking Dido had the most powerful army in the world (before our war). Actual warfare disproved this. Also Ships of the Line OP.
• What Harald's cities ended as.
• Alexander's continent - how the hell do I attack that?
• Ramesses's cities - so damn tempting.

I have friendships with Alexander and Ramesses, so they're both last. Ramesses looks way easier, so Alexander is probably going to be the final war. I've been collecting city states so fast that if I am too slow I might accidentally win diplomatic victory before I win domination.

I got Great Admiral too - that's like the most worthless Great Person of them all - and he even spawned in my capital instead of somewhere useful. None of my ships have range 3 and I started upgrading Longbowmen as 2 range Gatling Guns seem more useful against Musketmen level units.

Presumably I need to upgrade my fleets at some point - I don't even know what upgrades to what. I have Caravels, Privateers, and Ships of the Line right now, in somewhat large numbers.

I think I'm just going to land both my Gatling Guns from Cartage next to Tenochtitlan turn one when I'm invading it. That's the best they could be used for. Otherwise, naval bombardment from 2 tiles only is going to take forever.

Civilization 5 campaign: England (happy King)

I wondered if that silly thing where AI figures out I have troops on its borders and requests either immediate declaration of war or backing off applies to navies too - it does, Montezuma asked for war, so he got a war.

The war was fairly uneventful. I got one Ship of the Line with range 3 (too late to matter this war), but mostly took Montezuma's capital using two range 2 Gatling Guns.

I'm now researching towards Ironclads, then Destroyers and Battleships, but that will take forever.

I have friendships with both Ramesses and Alexander, but at this point there's no point stopping - as soon as my ships get repaired they'll go straight for Ramesses's capital. Ramesses is fighting Dido right now too (he peaced out Alexander), so it will be easy.

I just got to adopting ideology. I'm not sure which to choose, and I'm not sure if it even matters. I'm also trying to win the world fair. Hopefully I win by domination before I accidentally win by diplomacy (second screenshot).

Civilization 5 campaign: England (happy King)

Range 2 Gatling Guns and range 3 Ships of the Line with every single mobility bonus possible (England, Exploration, recently captured Great Lighthouse) are ridiculously overpowered.

Montezuma wouldn't peace out so I got another of his cities Texcoco - then I went to fight Ramesses (my declarations of friendship with Alexander and Ramesses expired ages ago, I'm not sure why I thought otherwise, I probably confused them with open borders which we kept renewing or something like that).

Another easy fight, Thebes taken, peaced out two turns later. Which was nice, as none of his other cities were anywhere near the coast, and I only had one range 2 Gatling Gun nearby (it didn't even come here from my army - I sent it all the way from Lisbon to pop up some ruins on a one tiny island I discovered very late, I thought I might as well move it to Egypt once instead of back home as both were about equally far away) so if he kept sending troops against me it would be pretty awkward to defend Thebes.

Thebes was really well defended - it had city bombardment, Crossbowman, and Frigate in the city, as well as another Crossbowman outside. That's not good enough compared with range 3 Ships of the Line (unfortunately only half of them have that range, I rushed too many in cities with just Barracks), but I lost a Caravel and a Privateer to all that (and my carelessness with melee units).

I'm just Athens away from victory. I'm not sure if I want to go straight for Athens or to take one or more of Alexander's cities in Bay of Athens first. There's only one tile within 6 tiles away from Athens that's not within shooting range of some city.

A war against Alexander will probably be a global war as well - maybe I should start right away, as plenty of action is going to happen even before my ships reach Athens? Any guesses when the game is going to end?

In some minor news, I took Order ideology like I do every single time - +25% science from factories and factories being built in half the time just looks so awesome, and free +2 happiness per city and 2x spy defense are also pretty nice. World Fair is going to trigger in a few turns, and something tells me I'm going to win it too :-)

Civilization 5 England campaign (happy King):

Domination victory in turn 263 - quite a bit faster than turn 382 I had in my Arabia campaign.

I sunk down Alexander's puny fleet (Dido had the largest fleet this campaign not counting me), then proceeded along western side of Bay of Athens taking Corinth, Sparta, then Athens. 1 Great War Infantry and 2 Gatling Guns landed there for help as well (one of Gatling Gun had extra range and extra attacks - OP much?). I thought about taking Pharsalos on eastern side of Bay of Athens to protect the attack, but it wasn't necessary given Athens' weak defenses and simultaneous attack from sea and land.

I burned down 2/4 towns Alexander founded on my continent - not for any military necessity, I just thought I might as well since we're at war.

Alexander was at war with Harald before, so he had a lot of troops on Danish/Aztec continent - and they successfully took my allied city state of Zurich, losing like 10-15 units in the process (I wasn't counting too closely). I could have sent my fleets to stop them, but instead I took Corinth, Sparta, and then Athens, sparing just a few units to defend Zurich (Ironclad, Privateer, Frigate I captured from Greece, and Ship of the Line). Screenshot is what's left of Alexander's army near Zurich. I'd probably be able to liberate it in a few turns, but the game ended.

It's a bit of a shame since next turn I'd be able to upgrade my Ships of the Line into Battleships with twice the firepower.

And that's enough civ5 for now. I'll continue my campaigns of RimWorld and XCOM Long War and probably add something new to the mix as it's more fun to play a few different games simultaneously. I haven't decided yet what to play.

I still this the game is too punitive in terms of happiness, but I definitely overdid it. The next time I'll play Civ5, I'll probably go Emperor with -10% or -15% unhappiness reduction - it sounds a lot more fun than playing unmodded King.
